Most of us feel that we lead a pretty mediocre life. Sometimes, even as a Christian, we feel there is no real driving purpose that guides our lives day to day. It's a routine and a necessary one at that. It's a terrible feeling to take a break and look back on a portion of our lives that, by the standards of Christ, have been wasted with merely earthy pursuits. It's a dreadful thing to let our lives shrink down to the size of our lives. Christ has appointed us to a high calling - we are ambassadors of the king of all creation. Do you believe that? Christ is King, and he has called us to herald the glory of his great kingdom before the revelation of it. He has called us to walk by faith and not by sight. The world would tell us that such heavenly mindedness makes us of no earthy good. However, God tells us that we will never be of any earthy good until we set our affections on things above (where Christ is). This is not our home. The things that are unseen are eternal (2 Cor. 3).
When we scan the landscape of Christianity today, very few people stand out as heavenly minded, faith-filled, Soldiers in the Kingdom of Christ. Hebrews instructs us that we should have heroes. We should seek God-centered men and women to look to, and imitate their faith. Heroes are hard to find today. They are few and far between. Sometime you must look 2 or 3 hundred years in the past to find such men and women.
